Ulysses S. Grant served at Jefferson Barracks, south of St.
Louis after graduating from West Point. While
visiting a friend’s home at White Haven, Grant met, fell in love with and
married Julia Dent. Because of his
leadership and victories during the Civil War, Grant received the rank of Lt.
General, the first person to achieve this rank since George Washington. As President, Grant oversaw re-construction
of the post war country.
Anhauser-Busch has the developed the land where the
Grants built their first home into a petting zoo and amusement area. The
original log house, Hardscrabble, is viewed on a tram ride through the property
